“You doing alright?” How to start a conversation.

June 13, 2025

We all get stressed, and we all get down – but sometimes we aren’t always great at asking for help!

If you see someone struggling, step in and start a conversation. Listening and giving someone your time might be just what they need to get them through.

We’ve got some tips to help you get that conversation started.

1. Just listen

Not every conversation needs a solution. Sometimes, people just need you to listen.

If you reckon someone’s not quite right, say something. A simple “You doing alright?” can open the door.

Here’s what good listening looks like:

  • Give them the room to talk
Let them get it out without cutting in. Even silence can be helpful.
  • Don’t jump in with answers
You’re not there to fix everything. Just hear them out.
  • Keep it steady
No need for advice or judgement. Just be there.

In racing, we back our animals. Let’s back our people the same way. Proper listening goes a long way.

2. Be there

Once someone’s opened up, don’t leave them hanging. You don’t need all the answers. Just stick by them.

Here’s how to be someone they can count on:

  • Ask what might help right now
What could take some pressure off today
  • Offer a hand
Could be covering a shift, sorting a job, or just checking in later
  • Mention the next step
If it fits, suggest talking to someone they trust or us here at OnTrack

Sometimes support looks small, but it can feel huge. Let them know they’re not facing it alone. That’s what being in racing is all about.

3. Check in again

The first chat matters, but it’s the follow-up that shows you’re serious. Don’t make it a one-off. If you’ve had a good yarn with someone, check in again.

Here’s how to keep the support going:

  • Say you’ll catch up again
Make it clear you’re coming back to check in.
  • Keep it chill
Doesn’t need to be a deep talk. Even a quick text can show you care.
  • Stick with it
Showing up more than once builds trust.

Knowing someone’s still in their corner can be a game changer.

You’re not alone — we’re here with you

OnTrack is here to listen and help you find the support you need, whether that’s talking things through, connecting you to support groups or services, or simply sharing a coffee with someone who understands.

In racing, we look out for each other.

  • If you’re worried about someone but not sure what to say, give us a call — we can help make that conversation a little easier.

  • There’s strength in the shared understanding that comes from being part of racing. Even when the words are hard to find, just showing up can mean a lot.

  • OnTrack Champions are people from the racing community — your peers. They’re trained to listen, support, and walk alongside you without judgement.  We can connect you with one of your local Champions.

If you need to talk, remember we are here for you.
